Penalties for importation of small amounts of cannabis

Q - I am in the U.S. and have a question. What is the usual consequence (sentence) for being caught by Customs bringing a tiny amount of personal use marijuana into the U.K., specifically Wales? I'd really appreciate any information you can offer.

A - The general rule of Customs & Excise is that a total amount of cannabis (hashish or marijuana) of under 10g (approx 3/8oz) will normally attract an on the spot fine, if it is a first offence and there are no other reasons to detain you. The practice is known as 'compounding', and avoids an appearance in court. Of course, if it happens once, you are likely to get pulled again, and again etc.

Most police forces caution first time offenders with small amounts for personal use, although what is defined as personal will vary from force to force.
